A quick introduction of myself. My name is Jeffrey Cooper and I am the resident Systems Engineer at Mac Outpost. In a nutshell I look after business and corporate systems and infrastructure (networking, backup systems, general I.T.).
One of the more common issues I run into in the field is concern of how to handle offsite company backups, especially if it is sensitive data.
There are two good ways to handle this.
The first option is the use of an encrypted hard drive, such as the Lacie Rugged Safe drive, this unit uses government-grade AES 128-bit hardware encryption, with a biometric fingerprint authentication sensor, which means if this drive is ever lost or stolen, you can be assured no-one will have any access to the files contained on the unit (up to 10 fingerprints can be authorized). You can not even reformat the drive without this access, rendering the drive and data useless to anyone other then you.
The second option is to take advantage of a new service that Mac Outpost is offering called Crashplan. This is a software program which backups up over the internet from your office to our secure London based servers into an encrypted file. This removes the issues of someone forgetting to backup the drive, or data corruption, and keeps your data in a secure safe location should the need ever arise to get it back. This service is priced on a case by case basis, depending on the amount of data and frequency of the backup, but makes a great fit into any business which needs to ensure that their data is safe in the event of a disaster such as a fire or flood, and at the same time meets all the standard for privacy concerns.
